The story behind Foocat

Foocat exists because of one cat: Gizmo. After many years of eating dry food, our cat Gizmo was diagnosed with diabetes.

It was a tough time. The vet was clear that there would be no judgement if we decided it was too much and stopped right there — but for us, that was never an option. We decided we could make it. What followed was five months of daily insulin shots, blood-sugar measurements, and a constant hunt for food low in carbohydrates.

Then Gizmo did what we had barely dared to hope for: he went into remission. Today he keeps his blood sugar stable without any insulin at all, and we strongly believe that the food he ate played a huge part in his recovery.

During those months I kept a spreadsheet where I entered every food product we came across in the stores, trying to find the ones low in carbohydrates. That spreadsheet was the starting point for this app. Reading the fine print of the analytical constituents on a package is not an easy feat — having your phone do it for you feels so much nicer.

And this is where you come in. Every product scanned into Foocat broadens the catalog we all share, so that the next cat with diabetes — and their humans — can find the right food faster than we did. As a team, we might help another Gizmo recover.

Foocat is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and on Google Play for Android.
